Hmm...

Just when I think I'm out of the woods... wham!!

I felt like a switch flipped a few days ago - I woke up nausea-free.  I've been feeling pretty good in my tummy!  Today... I woke up too early (with chubby little fingers tickling my foot - how cute), and it took me over 1 1/2 hours before I could get some food into my tummy.  Every few minutes that passed brought another bigger wave of nausea.  The causes for delay were legit - Dustin got hit/poked/something in the eye, boys needed their fruit, mama needed to go potty and then when I got out, there was another fight to break up, etc...  So I finally got some hot cereal into my tummy.  It was the one thing I could even consider swallowing this morning.

Well, the nausea hasn't even begun to subside yet.  *sigh*

Oh well.  Maybe tomorrow will be different.  Better.

I need to get groceries, but the thought of me not being at the top of my game and dragging two crazies out with me today just doesn't exactly motivate me.  We're having dinner company tonight, and I have no idea what I'm going to do/make.

I think I'm going to skip Playspot today.  I don't need the chaos today.  I'm glad it's a flexible thing to go to.

I read a funny story on Beth Moore's blog this morning - she is asking for funny illustrations and embarrassing stories from people, for material to put in her next video Bible Study series.  I giggled through the entire story:

My dad is a pastor. One Sunday morning as he was guest preaching at another church, he realized that his pants zipper was unzipped. This church had a clear acrylic podium, so he couldn't step behind the podium to zip up his pants. So he kept preaching while looking for a way to subtly zip up his pants. Then he noticed the American flag sitting on one side of the stage. (You know, old school baptist churches with the American Flag on one side and the Christian Flag on the other side) He walked over to the flag, somehow managed to add a little patriotic twist to his sermon, and zipped up his pants. But his zipper got caught in the tassels on the flag. And he was stuck. Zipper 1/2 way down, tangled to the flag. By now, he was sweating, and trying inconspicuously to wrestle with the flag tassels. Realizing there was no way out, he managed to keep the patriotic twist in the rest of his sermon (thank you, Lord, for quick thinking - and strong arm muscles to carry the flag for the rest of the sermon) and then told the congregation that he "thought it would be patriotic to all process out of the church like the kids in VBS do." He finished his sermon, led the entire church in the "procession" out (all while carrying the flag) and untangled his zipper. All without anyone in the congregation being any the wiser.
What a hoot!!

Bit off more than I can chew...

Today was my turn to bring snacks for Bible study, along with my friend, Karen.  We co-ordinated: she was bringing banana bread and fruit, and I would supply something 'chocolate' and some cinnamon buns.

Well, I decided to play Suzy Homemaker and bake two-bite brownies last night, and got up early to ice them this morning.  Chocolate overload!!  YUMMY....

Last night while Graeme was doing an online course for the PCN, I cleaned the kitchen and started making dough for cinnamon buns.  Around 10:30 last night, I got the cinnamon buns (two huge pans!) prepared with their goo in the bottom of the pan.  Covered them up and stuck 'em in the fridge overnight so that they wouldn't rise all crazy-like on me.  When I got up to frost the brownies, I pulled the buns out of the fridge and set them on the counter to warm to room temp before baking, but I found I was running out of time so I 'proofed' them in the oven to speed things up.

They came out of the oven, steaming fresh and hot, at 8:30 this morning.  Ten minutes later, after flipping them out of their pans and so that the goo could run all over them, I put them back in their pans, bolted out of the house with two kids, a preschool backpack, my Bible study stuff, the brownies, oven mitts, and the cinnamon buns.  I was even 'fortunate' enough to grab a shower before we left the house.

The work was worth it.  I love baking.  And the cinnamon buns were an absolute HIT!  :)  I only brought the large pan to Bible study, and brought the small pan to the pharmacy, where, of course, they were a hit, too.  Graeme says that my cinnamon buns are the best, and his staff loved them, too, but he's never tasted Gramma Ann's.  I have a tentative date to drive out to Daysland to take a cinnamon-bun lesson from her one day before Baby comes.

No workout last night... it was too late by the time I did stuff I had to do, even besides the cinnamon bun prep.  Tonight I'm exhausted already... I really want and *need* to work out tonight, but seriously, I feel just railroaded.  Boys will be in bed in one hour and life might look much different by then...

The boys are "shooting the moon" - Joshua pulled out his big watergun and is firing away at the moon!  Funny kid...  I think that they might be a little wet by now themselves...

Time to get supper on the table!

A good one, finally!

I'm not sure what it was about today.

Maybe it was being able to sleep in, because Graeme got up with Joshua this morning (kids don't 'get' time changes) and Dustin slept in, too.

Maybe it's that the boys have been MUCH nicer to each other these last couple of days - and Dustin is his downright joyful and happy self again.  Oh, and goofy.  And dare-devillish.  *shudder*

Maybe it was the fun lunch at Tim Horton's with the boys after church today.  Or the stress-free shopping at Costco and Superstore so that we could have some food in the house again.  I know, I know, Costco & Superstore & stress-free do not belong in the same sentence.  But there they are.

Maybe it was the fact that I got to take time to make a yummy roasted chicken & mashed potato dinner for Graeme tonight.  I didn't really enjoy it, but that's just hormones talking.  This used to be one of my favorite meals.

Maybe it's just the boys being happier overall to everybody... not just each other.

Maybe it's the accomplishment of 1 1/2 years of business paperwork compiled, organized, reconciled, etc, in the last 2 days.  I gotta tell you, that feels pretty good.

Maybe it's because it's getting close to Christmas.  I've already started listening to Christmas music - something I *never* do this early!

Maybe it was that I'm feeling so much better overall - out of the first trimester, not fighting bronchial or other infections, finding energy again, and only dealing with a bit of a stuffy head from the kids & Graeme being sick.

Maybe it's because I feel so blessed that I've been able to exercise again in light of the recent abovementioned illnesses...  5x last week, and once already this week (I count Sunday as the start of my workout week).  I did my first ever 1500m swim - it felt great, and I'm so amazed at what my body has been able to accomplish in the last few short weeks.

Or maybe it's *just* God working His handiwork in me, enough so that I could count today as a *good* day and that I can still see His hand orchestrating things amidst the chaos.  But I sure do feel blessed.  'Cuz I am.

Diff't sort of day

Petra.  Oldddddd.... petra.  Graeme's music from...high school?  I'm not sure.  But he pulled it out one day a year or so ago, and the kids are in love with the song called "Destiny".  First thing this morning, Graeme and I were both zonked out, and the boys put their heads together to find the CD, pop it into the CD player, and dance their little hearts out first thing in the morning.  It's pretty rockin' 80's (or early 90's?) music.  The house was shaking from their dancing!!  Dustin was in *that mood* ALL day today.  It was rather fun.

I won't even talk about the middle part of my day... it was frustrating and I walked away feeling steamrolled and disrespected again.  Joshua said to me a few days ago, "I don't think _____ likes you."  He got to see it in action again today.  He's not a dumb kid.  He knows when someone is disrespecting someone else.  We've taught him how to respectfully talk to other people even when you disagree with them (as do his teachers at church and preschool), and he certainly does not see the same mannerisms reciprocated sometimes.  I hate being made to feel like my goals and my wishes are worthless.  I am frustrated because just when things seem to start to get better... wham.  Steamrolled again.  I didn't even have any control over this one, really.  But it happens time and time again.

This is where I get to press into God and find out what He thinks of me... what He thinks of how I handle situations, and what He thinks of my goals.  I am not perfect or more righteous than the next person, this I know.  But I am led once again to surround myself with positive people who seek to lovingly motivate and inspire - people who can tell me like it is without attacking my character or my desires.   I don't mind being challenged... but by the right people who are gentle enough to expose the flaw instead of trample the person.  Make sense?

We had a pancake party tonight.  Yum!  Forgot to buy milk today - good thing there's leftover pancakes for tomorrow morning's breakkies!!  :)  Little pancakes can be tossed in the toaster.  Sounds good to me!

I skipped working out tonight.  Well, it wasn't in the original plan anyway, so I guess technically it's not 'skipping', is it?  I did go to the pool last night, though, after the kids were in bed.  I was tired all day from it, though!!  I swam 1000m (40 lengths) - a personal *record*.  Even I'M starting to be impressed!!  :)  So I did 5 days this week, and am very happy with that.  I would've liked to get some weights in, but 5 strong cardio workouts is better than sittin' on my butt all night every night... 'cuz believe me, the urge to be lazy is STRONG sometimes!! ...especially when my ONLY guaranteed consistent workout time is after the boys are in bed, and my brain begins to shut down...

Tonight was filled with baths for the boys, paperwork, and more paperwork.  Taking a blogging break here, and then I'll finish off a few things before hitting the hay.  My tummy is rumbling, and I have a strange craving for veggies and dip.  Must be partly due to only eating one little 3" pancake tonight.  It wasn't going down well, so I just sorta stopped eating.  Are veggies bad before bed?

Strange Things...

I had another one of *those* days yesterday.  I was getting sick, and Dustin was getting over something, and Joshua is just generally bossy with his brother and demanding with me.  Compound that with Joshua *needing* to dress up for preschool, and my scramble last-minute to find suitable costumes for him and his brother.

I hate Halloween.  I hardly ever use the word *hate*, but I really do hate halloween.  I like the candy, though.  :)  I mostly hate that I get steamrolled by others' opinions about what I should or should not do with my kids - it's like my opinion doesn't matter.  We don't go trick or treating because honestly, my kids don't need the candy and they also don't need to learn that it's OK to go door-to-door asking complete strangers for candy.  They also don't need the images in their heads of ghosts and goblins and other creepy stuff that's out on the streets.

I'm OK with costume parties, though.  Just an aside - we had an adult costume party last year at some friends' house - I wasn't sure how I'd feel about it but it was a lot of fun.  The kids also went to a scare-free fun community thing, which we all loved.

But the kids... I know it's "the experience" and all that for them, but there's a check in my spirit about the direction that Halloween has generally taken.  I know I can't protect my kids forever, but I know what evil images can plant themselves in my kids' heads and give them nightmares.  They're too little to discern for themselves!

Anyway, so I got sicker last night and slept for all of about 2 hours.  I could easily be the witch today, I'm that grumpy-feeling.  Dustin was a crabby-crab and wants me to carry him everywhere, but the problem is I'm still sort of weak from the bronchitis and lack of sleep (despite being able to exercise like a mad-woman..somehow that's different from carrying a 35-lb deadweight child who doesn't like to hold on)...  So I'm a little grumpy.

Funny incident - last night as Dustin was crabbing, I gave him a pre-dinner snack of yogurt-covered raisins.  He loves those things.  Suddenly he starts crabbing a bit again and I asked him what was wrong *this time*... "My nose!"... then, "Raisin!"  Uh-oh... so I enlisted the help of Daddy and we got the thing extracted.  It was actually really comical.  Poor kid!

Off to the races... I really want to go swimming again tonight, but not sure if it'll work (depending on how I'm feeling, etc)... I'd like to do something special at home with the boys so that they don't feel like they're missing out on the trick-or-treating... maybe make home-made pizza (or order in if necessary) and have a little treasure-hunt...

Making adjustments

So last night didn’t go at ALL as planned – neither plan A (G at meeting, me swimming, friend babysitting) nor plan B (stay home and ellipticalize my life) worked out.

Enter Plan C.

When Graeme got home, Joshua and I went on a ‘date’. We went shopping and then for supper.  It was fun!

Graeme had decided that he was too sick (sinuses are driving him nuts!) to go to the meeting, so told me that Conrad can ‘earn his pesos’ tonight and go alone.  G is in pretty rough shape, so it was good that he stayed home.

G’s decision to stay home enabled me to stay out with Joshua longer.  Dustin was really crabby after his nap and was livid with me for leaving.  Little crabby-crab, he is!  No more puking, though, thankfully.  I’ve got enough laundry to do to as it is!

Got home at 8:10.  Could’ve made my lesson, but I was stressed out from Superstore and kinda not feeling great, so I didn’t go to my lesson.  I’d decided earlier that I wasn’t going because of Dustin being sick and Graeme not being home, so it wasn’t a big deal to me any more.  At noon, though, missing my lesson WAS a big deal, but that changed.

Later, around 8:45, I decided I might try to go for the ‘lane swim’ time anyway.  So I did some office work and then headed out – jumped in the pool around 9:40, and swam 34 lengths.  It felt great – I’m so glad I went!!  I am really starting to notice a difference in my efficiency... I've cut down my time by around 30% easily.  And I didn’t even use flippers tonight!  :)  So yeah, I felt good (even though that’s a REALLY slow time for that distance...I’m no Michael Phelps! -  I still need breaks after almost every length!!).

So now, going into next week’s lesson, I feel like I’ve actually improved enough to get the ‘next set’ of pointers.  You know?  (...quoting Dustin).  I am hoping to get in one or two more swims before next Wednesday.  I am not a fan of front crawl – I like to have my face out of the water, and be able to breathe properly, which front crawl is not conducive to... But last night I dedicated myself to doing at least a few lengths of front crawl.  And you know what?  I can almost do it without panicking!  :)  Now if only I could swim in a straight line...

Did you know I can breathe under water?  I’m so talented... At this point, I can only exhale underwater, but that’s halfway there!

Then I rinsed out my super-suit and went to bed!

Today I feel garbagey - yesterday I felt like I was coming down with a cold, and then my day went OK... today I DEFINITELY feel more cold-ish.  I've used several kleenexes and I've only been up for about 15 minutes!  But it feels like one of those colds that's worst in the morning and then once you get the night-time backlog out of your system, it's all good.  Here's hoping, anyway!  :)

Time to make some tea and let the kids get up (Dustin is already awake - I can hear him coughing and playing).  I found some raspberry leaf tea at a local health food store - looking forward to trying it out!

Plans out the window...

As a mama, you have to be prepared for any twist and turn in the road.

For example, one of my biggest physical frustrations is that I get sick, and then it takes a while to get over enough so that I can exercise again (breathing is SO important!).  So I get back on the wagon, and then two or three days later, something else comes up.  Sometimes it's work meetings for Graeme, sometimes it's just plain fatigue on my part, but this time, it's another illness.  I am not *beyond* being able to exercise at this point, and I likely will tonight.  But between my biggest germ-bag (Graeme) and my littlest germ-bag (Dustin), I have been surrounded... and last night I started getting sick again.  AGAIN!!  I will still work out tonight... BUT...

Tonight was supposed to be my swimming lesson.  But Graeme has a meeting that he found out about yesterday (fun fun).  Pretty important, so he can't miss it.  So I arranged for some babysitting; the kids would've been in bed by the time I leave anyway, so it would be more like 'house-sitting'.  So far, we've worked around the 'meeting' wrinkle.

Then Dustin starts puking during his nap.  Twice.  About 20 minutes apart.  Definitely can't leave him with a sitter when he's got a tummy bug - nobody should have to clean up my kid's puke, even if I am paying them.  Sooo... swimming is out for tonight.  Unless I can go when Graeme gets home from work just for a 'solo' swim, no lesson, and get home by the time he has to leave for the West End.  Not likely that a swim will actually happen, though.  And if that doesn't work out, then i guess I'll hop on the elliptical and do some weights as well after the boys are in bed.  Last night's workout didn't happen (something I ate really didn't agree with me and I was in a LOT of pain last night!), so I have to get on that tonight.

Here is my BIG dilemma as a mom... bear with me...
  • I was not in 'proper' shape when I got pregnant this time.  Like I said, it was a bit of a shock.
  • Thankfully I was exercising before my pregnancy - I can continue with the intensity and frequency for now, and even increase a little.
  • So, I am highly motivated.  I want to be healthier at the end of the pregnancy than I was 3 months ago.
  • BUT, there's all the housework, the cooking, the laundry, the erranding, and the corresponding.
  • How do I balance 'keeping my home in order' with 'keeping ME in order'?  Because if I can't get/keep myself in order, the rest isn't going to happen, either...  I'm not one to take a lot of 'me' time, but I absolutely have to keep myself in shape (and hopefully improve) over the next 6 months or I'm going to be in a LOT of trouble after this baby is born.  I want to give myself the best shot possibly at a good labor and delivery, and especially a good post-partum with this baby.  I had a lot of trouble after Dustin, and if I have a repeat this time, it won't be pretty.
  • Do I feel guilty about letting the house go for an hour a day so I can exercise and try and make myself stronger and healthier and more stable?  Because that is what it'll take for me to stay on top of my physical health.  Some people can get by with much less, but I'm starting out at a deficit, remember?  I know I need an hour a day, at least 5 days a week.  And not just a stroll around the block, either... either hard swimming (hard for me), or sweaty on the elliptical, or whatever - all within the 'safe' limits of pregnancy.  And I do have the green light from my doctor.
I'm so glad I have a supportive husband, and a loving God who accepts me as I am, but still challenges me to become better and more 'whole'.  I so much want to do the 'right' thing... but I struggle with such feelings of guilt at 'work' not getting done!!

Letting the world know

It's time to let people know, before I show up to a function in maternity clothes!!  I told some women at Bible study today, which was kinda fun - Annelies gave me a big hug across the table, she was so excited!  Some other women overheard, too, and of course now the news will spread like wildfire.  You know church women!! :)

I'm 14 weeks already.  My pants still fit, but it's only a couple more weeks before I'm forced to move up to my maternity clothes.  *sigh*  I really haven't enjoyed wearing maternity clothes for the most part - they are so blasted expensive that I can't justify the expense for just a few short months!! - so I usually cheap out and usually don't feel very pretty in them.  The biggest thing this time around is finding a jacket that will fit!!  Last time I borrowed a 'large' friend's jacket (at her offer), but we're not really in touch any more and so I'm up the creek.  I don't really want to spend $80 on a maternity jacket.  Graeme says it'll be worth it during the cold winter months, since I'm going to be in and out of the house SO much running around with the boys.

Here are some pictures I took a couple weeks ago:

Exercise:  I've been a good girl!!  On Sunday I was kinda frustrated and needed to burn some steam, so I got on the elliptical.  All my steam was burned off in about 10 minutes, but I stayed on for 42 minutes - the duration of a one-hour TV show with all the commercials fast-forwarded.  Then last night I went to the pool after a ladies' event at our old church (which was a birthday party consisting of CAKE, of which I actually had a hard time eating my portion - so I exercised some self-control and just stopped!) and swam 30 lengths in a record time.  Record for me, anyway.  The flippers that I used for about 12 of those lengths helped.  :)  Above all, I want this to be the healthiest pregnancy - not overdoing it, but coming out at the completion healthier than I went in.  I have my doctor's blessing for exercise since I've been exercising prior to pregnancy and all has gone well in previous pregnancies.  So, my goal is to go to the pool 3-4 times a week (2x lap swimming, and 1-2 times aquafit classes), plus some extra cardio and weights at home 1-2 times a week.

Dustin is learning how to pray, and likes to say the following (he made it up himself):  "Dear Jesus, thank you for Mommy and Daddy and Joshua and me and the little teeny tiny little baby."  He say sit over and over because we giggled the first time and it's just so cute...

Yes, we're thankful.  It's all a little surreal, still.

OVbunEN

Here's my ongoing journal that I started waaay back in August as a draft post.  Time to let the world know!  (This might be kinda boring to some of you... skip if you wish... but it's my thoughts over the last 2 1/2 months.... scary, hey?)

Monday, August 18h, 2008... I had an inkling. I also had a test left over from a 2-pack (I always buy them in 2-packs - much cheaper!). So I took the test... and... I passed!!

Shock. Oh yeah. We want another baby... but weren't really expecting to be expecting so soon!! - I am still plagued with a number of health issues... I'm a little afraid... definitely caught off guard. I wonder, how did this happen? But then I guess I already know the answer... The good news that comforts me is that this baby is not a surprise to God. But still, I'm a little freaked out. How on earth will handle 3, when sometimes I can't even handle 2?? Then I think of my friend Paige, who has just recently had #6. She seems to be doing just fine.

I spent the rest of the day in a daze.

Thursday, August 21st... I finally got up the nerve to tell Graeme. We just decided to leave our church in search of something a little more "Graeme-friendly". Graeme made another decision regarding work. I knew it was the time to tell him.. until now, he's either been in a bad mood, or preoccupied with something else... but I got that thumping in my chest that God uses to signify to me that it's the right time. So I go to the office, pull out the 3 1/2 day old stick, and put it in my pocket. I tell him that "big things" come in 3's... and show him the stick. It takes a few seconds to register, but then he gets all weepy and hugs me. OK, he's happy. I was honestly afraid that he'd be a little worried/disappointed/upset, especially since we weren't "planning" on another one quite yet. But he's happy. Whew!

Friday, August 22nd... off to Jerry & Faith's to spend a night playing Bid Wist. I've vowed to make this the healthiest pregnancy ever and to gain *only* the necessary weight, as I'm overweight to begin with... admittedly, that's kind of hard when the hosts stick big bowls of munchies in front of you. I was successful in drinking several glasses of water, and eating just a few little munchies. I was able to keep the bowl on the other end of the table.

Saturday, August23rd... I'm still trying to figure out when this baby is supposed to be due. For the life of me, I just can't get my dates straight. With the hormone replacement cream I've been using, I've been diligent to write down all the important dates... but for some reason, I neglected to in July. So, this baby could theoretically be due anytime from middle to end of April. Just what the family needs - the LaRue family already has about half a dozen April birthdays!!

Monday, August 25th - I go to see my family doctor. Graeme came for moral support, and told the doc that we're having another baby. He got up and shook our hands and congratulated us. I was a little nervous about his response, as he's made allusions before to the stress that the boys bring upon me, and that I needed a little girl. He also asked me about a year ago if Graeme was going to get a vasectomy (the boys were particularly troublesome that day in his office). Anyway, today, his reaction was positive. Whew!

Tuesday, August 26th - I went up to see my family doc's receptionist, as I had some information for her from my ob/gyn. She took down the info for me, and then told me I should talk to the doctor myself, so she just got me in! A totally impromptu appointment - he did a bunch of work-up on me, including ordering an early ultrasound (which I'll do in a couple of weeks) to figure out when this little one will show up. He weighed me (ugh!) and then took my blood pressure. I told him that he should've taken my BP first... that weighing me probably made my BP shoot up by about 10 points! My BP was fine - 100/60. Pretty standard for me. No wonder I'm dizzy all the time. And that BP was taken JUST after I'd been walking...

So I'm doing OK in the food & exercise department. Yesterday I made two very large very yummy veggie skillets, and went for a 20km bike ride at a slower pace than my usual. I then did about half an hour of moderate weights. As far as I'm concerned, as long as I'm not over-exerting, I'll be OK. Must keep breathing!! :) Today, I had a banana and a cuke for lunch, along with 3 crackers and a small chunk of cheese. And I did about 40 minutes on the rower until my body told me to stop. The boys are at Gramma & Grampa's tonight; tomorrow I'll sleep in a bit, and maybe go for a big bike ride again. As long as I can, I shall. I'll be careful, Mommy!

I'm using a website called babyfit.com to monitor food and nutrients. I'm doing well in the calorie dep't, but my diet is definitely lacking in the iron and folate categories. I definitely need to figure out how to get more of those very valuable and necessary nutrients!!

So I went off a medication cold-turkey on Thursday on the advice of my pharmacist, and so far, after 5 days without, no side effects - at least not the ones you would expect. I am beyond thankful for that!!

I was counting the other night, and realize I have about a dozen pregnant friends right now. I'll have to do an accurate count soon.

Time for bed. I have to pee first, though. Story of my pregnant life.

Friday, August 29, 2008 - Not really much going down these days. Still lovin' the veggies, still exercising. Did a 25km ride on Wednesday, which was good, but I paid for it yesterday with my sore knee. Surgery? Well, that's out the window now. I should really call and take myself off their list. No surgery with a bun in the oven! I went for a good really brisk 2 mile walk last night, though - first time for a power-walk without kiddies, and it was sure different!

Did I mention I'm not a fan of adrenaline rushes by the way of dogs chasing me while I'm on my bike? Sheesh.

There are 3 cherry pies in the oven. A customer of Graeme's has us come over and pick cherries - this is the second time we've gone in 3 years. The first year, they were only suitable for making jelly. This year, I'm trying my hand at my first ever cherry pies. Thankfully, I don't really like cherry pie, so I won't be tempted to dig in. It's all for Graeme (and the boys, if they'll like it... not sure).

Kids are not napping well today. I'm really tired. Maybe I'll be fortunate enough to grab a nap when Graeme comes home??

I have my first ultrasound booked for September 10th. Karen is going to babysit the boys for me. It's so funny - the receptionists (I've had to call around for a date that worked for Graeme to come, too!) always ask me how far along I am... and for the first time, I have to respond that I haven't got a clue!!

Time to clean up the kitchen. Good thing I'm *allowed* up to 300mg of caffeine per day. I think a Coke Zero has something like 34 mg. I could really use it right now. It'll be my first caffeine in days...

September 3/08 - Strange few days.  The fatigue is definitely settling in, and boy do I have to fight it!!  The desire to exercise is gone out the window as well, however, I went for a 7-mile ride in the almost-dark tonight anyway (I have a headlight for my bike).

My appetite is all over the place - yesterday I found all foods (even steak and corn on the cob!) to be bland... yet today, I am insatiably hungry.  My tummy growls at midnight or later, so tonight I had a toast snack around 10:00, which I never do!!  We'll see how that helps.

Only a week until my first ultrasound... I'm excited!!

I'm also exhausted and am having trouble keeping my head upright and eyes open as I type.. time for bed!

September 7/08 -The nausea is heading full force.  I wake up feeling disgusting, feel fine for about 20 minutes after I eat something, and then feel disgusting again.  As much as I am determined not to gain much weight, I can see how it can happen - if food is the only thing that can settle my queasy tummy, then how do I avoid a ridiculous amount of weight gain?

The good news is that I feel pretty good between 4:00 and 8:00 at night.  Whew.

The other good news is that while I feel pretty garbagey most of the time, I can still exercise.  I pushed past it yesterday as Graeme and I rode our bikes for 2 1/2 hours in the River Valley.

Such fun!!I am somewhere between 7 and 9 weeks.  I'll find out on Wednesday with my ultrasound!!

September 17/08 - went to the lab to have all my prenatal bloodwork done today.  My GP also ordered a GDS (gestational diabetes screening) - not sure why, since that's not usually done until somewhere around 32 weeks or so.  At any rate, I'm sitting there waiting my turn, and all of a sudden I realize that women are popping these drinks left, right, and centre!!  There were FIVE of us taking the GDS test - you have to drink this orange crush-like carbonated drink - I actually quite like it.  Then you have to wait around for an hour.  I was the only one who didn't look pregnant enough to be doing the test, but whatever.

Then I read Jen's blog last night, and she had her GDS test yesterday, too!  I wish I could've shared that funny coincidence with her yesterday, but we still haven't told anyone about the pregnancy.

Oh yes, my ultrasound last week went well - baby is due April 27th.  I'm about 8 1/2 weeks along now.

September 18/08 - I can't believe I've known for a month already that we're having another baby.

I was out tonight at worship team.  Graeme put the kids to bed.  He asked Joshua if he'd like to have another little baby brother or sister.

Joshua's answer?  "Oh yes, I'd like that!  Maybe one of each!  But do you think you could make sure they're cute?"

Then... "Daddy, where do babies come from?"

Kids.  Such inquisitive little beings!

Monday, October 20th - So I've not been on much lately.  Been too sick!  By now everyone knows about the 12-day fever, the UTI, and the bronchitis.  A couple people have joked that i might be pregnant, but I retort that you don't get a 12-day fever because you're pregnant!  That being said, the pregnancy explains WHY I was sick for so long.  Yay immune system.

We told family last weekend, at Thanksgiving.  The response was not very enthusiastic, however, I think it largely has to do with the fact that I was still feeling really sick and was not very enthused myself.  We'd intended for Dustin to say, "I'm thankful because I'm going to be a big brother."  However, in 'rehearsal', the word "brother" came out like some sort of unrepeatable expletive, so we nixed that plan and got Joshua to announce it instead.

I sent my mom a picture of a bun in an oven (courtesy of Graeme's mom's oven and a leftover bun from dinner the other night), but she hasn't replied yet.  Sure, the phone would be easier, but not as fun.  I go for the 'fun factor' when telling family and close friends.

Speaking of fun factor, I made a HUGE gift bag for my friend Karen.  At Dustin's birthday party in April, she and her family had the boldness to write a strange shopping list for me, including items such as a train (which I fashioned out of play-doh), a worm (I love the dollar store), kraft dinner, chocolate, coke, 2 frogs, and a bunch of other things... oh yes, and a baby sister.  I bought a gender-neutral-colored balloon which was covered in rattles and bottles and other such baby paraphernalia, and wrapped it up in tissue and wrote "open me last".  I thought for SURE that by the 3rd or 4th item, she'd figure it out (and remember the list, 'cuz it was so disjointed, who could forget?), but nope... not until she opened the balloon.  I then showed her the list and she clued in even more as to WHY I'd given her such strange items.  Of course she was happy.  Her daughter, though, didn't even 'get it' until she saw the list and had the "sister for J&D" pointed out to her.  Too funny!!

We plan on letting the whole world know later this week.  Today I am 13 weeks (or maybe it was yesterday?) - so by the end of the week I'll officially be out of my first trimester.  I haven't heard the heartbeat yet since I've been sick - Baby was fine at our 7 1/2 week ultrasound, but I want to make sure he/she is OK before we make this totally public knowledge.  I have a doc's appt on Wednesday, at which point we SHOULD be able to hear the heartbeat.

Gotta get those kiddies dressed and out the door - it's SO windy today, I do NOT want to be outside.  One of my pet peeves with my own personal pregnancies is that while most women roast, I freeze.  It feels like I'm constantly feverish, it's *that* kind of chill.  I go through most of the 9 months with a sweater.  Just plain backwards.  Anyway....

October 27th/08 - I feel generally gross.  I am 14 weeks now.  I worked out last night, for which I'm really thankful, but the nighttime is my *best* time.  I'm swimming quite a bit, but not eating very well.  Gone are the healthy cravings, replaced with the unhealthy cravings - if it's made of pure salt or pure sugar, I'm a happy girl.  Mind over matter, I keep telling myself.  Tell the hormones that, though!

I still haven't let the facebook world know yet - I have to tell some people at church first, tomorrow.  I just feel so nauseous that it's hard to feel that 'pregnancy glow' that I'm sure doesn't exist one iota.  :)

I had my doctor's appointment last week - all is well.  The heartbeat was 164.  Obviously a girl, one might say, however, Joshua was 160-170 bpm until he was about 8 1/2 months gestation.  No bets on the gender of the baby from the heart rate alone, I'll tell ya that much!

The nurse was funny... she told me that I'd lose some weight, and asked if I'd been sick.  I was thinking that she certainly didn't read my chart from last time that I'd been really sick, but I explained to her anyway, then jokingly said, "At least I have it to lose."  She was far too quick to agree with me.  I'm overweight, but not THAT much!!  Sheesh!!

Oh, by the way, my mom thought the picture of the bun in the oven was a baked alaska!!  So I sent her a picture of Dustin in his "I'm a big brother" shirt, that used to be Joshua's.  Then she got it.  Way to go, Mom!

I'm thankful that all is going well, even though I feel so crummy.  I'm still trying to recover from my 3-week long illness in addition to another week of uselessness... catching up on laundry and housecleaning, and generally trying to keep my head above water.  Some days I don't feel like I'm doing a very good job.  Having another baby requires an incredible amount of faith and trust in God...

My Joshua

Both boys napped, Praise God.  He knows I needed it!  I still have my headache, though.

Joshua came into my room at 3:30 (they went down at 12:30 - I got THREE HOURS out of them, although I didn't lay down till 1:00 or maybe 1:30).  He climbs in my bed and asks how I'm feeling, and I just tell him I'm feeling kinda yucky, but that I'll survive.

Ready for his response?

"Mommy, I know you're not sick in your body, you're just sick in the head."

LOL!  If only he really knew, hey?  :)

Random Thoughts

When I say random, I do mean random:

  • I am constantly frozen.  That's backwards.
  • I have a killer headache.  That was expected - it's been months since I've seen the chiropractor, and I knew it was coming.  When I'm 'overdue', it's always a rebound headache.  At least I don't have the shoulder and back pain any more, though.
  • My oven is a mess.  Like, cherry-pie-spillover type mess.  I need someone to clean my oven.
  • I would like to stop blacking out, thank you very much.
  • I get to start wearing compression stockings for the blacking out.  They're still out in the van.  Picked them up yesterday.  Hopefully they make a difference, though, otherwise I'm not going to know what to do!
  • Graeme is gone for the weekend (well, today and tomorrow).  To Calgary.  For a conference for the PCN.  Lucky duck.  Not so lucky that he is getting sick and had to catch a flight and get up at 4:30 this morning to do so.
  • My house is a disaster.  Where IS that cleaning fairy, anyway?
  • It's been an interesting day today.  It's like Joshua has the terrible two's again.  Just for yesterday and today, though.
  • I might go to the Library later.  The cold air still triggers coughing fits, so I can't be outside much, much to the chagrin of the boys.  Poor guys.  It's been a while since we've been to the library, so maybe we'll do that post-nap.  Maybe.
  • I'm craving an orange.  A mandarin.  But we ate the last ones yesterday.
  • I went to my first deep-water aquafit class last night... thankfully it's a drop-in (no pun intended, but I'm giggling anyway).  I'm not sure if I liked it or not.  That belt was really uncomfy.
  • I swam on Wednesday night (did I already blog about that?).  My second set of adult lessons started.  Incredibly informal - there were 6 or 8 of us, most of us had our own lanes, and we just swam and the instructor gave us as little or as much advice as we wanted.  We are ALL at such different places.  I swam about 24 lengths, and thought that was pretty good considering the many breaks I have to take with the breathing issues ... and then I got home and saw a friend's status update about her 4500m swim that night.  I would love to do that one day.  She's probably been swimming her whole life, though.  Maybe by the end of the fall I'll be able to easily swim 1000-1500 metres?
  • How DO you keep track of that many lengths?  4500 metres is something like 180 lengths, no?  I have trouble keeping track past 12!
Time to go nap!

Strength

Today I've had one song running through my head ALL day... just can't kick it.  Sometimes that happens and I just detest it because it drives me crazy, but in this case, I'll take it.

I've been so tired and overwhelmed lately.  I'm thankful for some close understanding friends who are easy to talk to and vent to and rebound off of.  But in light of my recent illness, I still can't seem to get back on my feet.  I am just beat.

Everlasting God
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
Wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord.
Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord,
Wait upon the Lord, we will wait upon the Lord

Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our strong deliverer....

You are the everlasting God,
The everlasting God,
You do not faint, You won't grow weary.
You're the defender of the weak,
You comfort those in need,
You lift us up on wings like eagles.

Isaiah 40:31 -
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Yesterday

I didn't have the boys for most of the day yesterday, so I thought I'd get a LOT of stuff done.  This is an excerpt from an e-mail I sent to a friend yesterday (I've made some minor edits).

Subject line:
My afternoon

Body:
Or... “my not-so-funny, very non-productive afternoon”...

Got to South Common; my purpose?  To look at and hopefully pick up some clothes for myself.  It’s so hard to clothing-shop with two boys in tow, so I thought I’d take the chance while I had *a couple hours*
.

Got lunch instead.  My tummy was rumbing, and my 1/2 apple at 8:30 a.m. wasn’t quite cutting it 3 hours later.

Ate lunch.

Went to one store.  Wasn’t impressed by anything (or the prices, generally).  Left.

Went to Old Navy, remembering they, too, had some neat things.  Didn’t see anything I liked, so I looked at boys’ shirts instead.  Old Navy has decent prices on some of their kids’ stuff.  Bought some kids’ stuff.

Went to another other store.  Repeat of first store.

Went to Children’s Place (same parking lot), remembering that I had to buy a baby shower gift for 2 friends.  Bought cute little boy clothes.  Wish I’d remembered at Old Navy instead.  Could’ve saved myself 20 minutes in line.

Also wish I’d remembered my chiropractor appointment, which I remembered
while I was in line at Children’s Place.

Got out to the van, called Chiropractor's office.  Apologized profusely, asking if he was happening to be running 40 minutes late.  Receptionist laughed.  Rebooked for Friday.  Apologized again (this is the 2nd in a row I’ve missed; last one being 4 months ago; I’ve been bad and haven’t been in, and my neck is screaming for help).  Tried to explain myself, but gave up when I choked up.

Stupid hormones.

Started driving home.  Started crying on the off-ramp to the Henday.  Stupid hormones.

Got home, checked my facebook, and went to bed.

Woke up 2 hours later.  Feeling very rested and happy.

Gramma wants me to come pick up the boys.  Now.
(Note:  we ended up having dinner there and the boys ended up staying the night.)

I’ve done NOTHING at home all day.  Yucky.  The one day I have to actually accomplish something, and not only do I not accomplish it, but I go backwards by missing an important appointment.

*sigh*

I think I need help...

Sweet & Salty Granola Bars

I love baking.  I love finding new recipes where you can make things that are WAY cheaper than buying the pre-baked, preserved, pre-packaged junk in the store...

Here is my latest attempt (this, by the way, is not my own personal picture, however, they actually DO turn out looking like this!):

videos.aspx.jpg

Sweet & Salty Granola Bars

Ingredients:
3 cups instant oats (like quaker brand)
1 cup coarsely chopped almonds (I pre-buy sliced in bulk)
1 cup sunflower or pumpkin seeds (or a mixture of both - yummy!)
1 cup raisins
1 can (300mL) sweetened condensed milk (next time I'm going to use the low-fat version)
1/2 cup vegetable shortening (like Crisco), melted - see note below.
1 tbsp salt

Topping:
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 tsp salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Line a 15" x 10" jelly roll pan (I used a regular cookie sheet) with parchment paper.

Mix first ingredients together in a big bowl.  Press evenly into pan.  Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Cool slightly.  Melt chocolate.  Mix salt into melted chocolate.  Drizzle over bars.  Allow chocolate to harden before cutting into bars.  Makes 36 really yummy bars.

Notes:
Apparently one baker has omitted the vegetable shortening.  She heated the condensed milk enough (so that it was softer) to make mixing all the ingredients easier, without the added fat of the shortening.  I might try this next time.

A whole cup of chocolate chips is a LOT.  Probably 2/3 or 3/4 would be sufficient.

I'm a big fan of taking things out of my nice cookie sheets to cut them.  Overhanging the edges of the cookie sheet with parchment paper will allow you to lift the bars out onto your counter or large cutting board, and to chop into bars much more easily.  I've ruined too many cookie sheets over the last few years!

The original recipe (without my running commentary) appears here.  Enjoy!!  Graeme loves these, and so does Joshua.  Dustin is more into the chocolate topping than anything else.  Regardless, these freeze well, and have a lot of good stuff in them!

Crazy words

i love how little people talk.

Dustin:
a 'whirly-doo' is a "larry-doo".
a 'diaper' is a "biper"
'twinkle, twinkle little star' is "pinko-pinko, liddow tar"
'thank you' is "kink-you"
'nap' is "map"
'gramma' and 'grampa' are "Bramma" and "Brampa"
'Joshua' is "Daw-sha"
'granola bar' is a "bola-bar"
'Bible study" is "Bi-bow tudy"

I love listening to his conversations with Joshua.  Joshua can mostly decipher what his little brother is saying, which is really cool.  It definitely helps them to play TOGETHER as opposed to side-by-side independent play.

I am taking my first attempt at making sweet & salty granola bars.  I followed the recipe to an absolute 't', so they should turn out, theoretically.  My favorite part about the 'sweet' is that it's not just sugar added - in fact, no white or brown sugar at all - the recipe uses sweetened condensed milk.  Oh, and a bit of chocolate drizzle on top.  :)

Just got a call from Graeme - one of his techs is sick, so he will likely be pulling the all-day shift today.  She is running a temp and he is sending her home.  These are long days right now.  Yesterday was a gong-show... totally busy at the store, but add to that the excitement of a patient fainting in the store, taking down (and handily breaking) a shelving unit in the process.  Oh, dear...

Time to get the boys down for naps!  (Have I ever mentioned how much I love naptime?  And how much I love the fact that Joshua still regularly naps - and yes, goes to bed nice and early and sleeps all night?  And I love my own nap as a result, too...)

Promised Pictures

Dustin had to have Pooh-Bear at the table with him the other day during breakfast:

Joshua took this picture of Dustin one morning when I was sick - it's a fabulous picture!  Way to go Joshua!

I might've already posted pictures of Dustin's first dentist visit, but I thought he did so good, it's worth another post:

My little strong man... was insistent that he could carry the flour and sugar for me.  And he did!!!

His first day of preschool!  I actually worked with his teacher at Bible Camp a few years back.  He's doing really well with preschool, and is learning lots!!

Leaf pictures from yesterday:

The mountains to the west of where I went for my retreat.  I woke up about 10 minutes too late, because the mountains were even more pink before this.  Apparently, looking west in the morning from this place is the only way to see the sunrise - these mountains can get super-pink!!  I'm still glad I got this picture, though.  It was a beautiful place!!

A bit better

So, I'm back.  I guess I feel a bit better than i did on Sunday.  I've had some good conversations with close friends over the past few days, which has been really inspiring and calming, all at the same time. Doesn't help immensely with the energy problem, but it helps to have someone who understands.

Anyway, my biggest struggle these last few days has been the cold air triggering asthma attacks and coughing fits.  I'm not as faint as often right now, either, which is a huge answer to prayer.  I might even be able to start exercising a bit again soon.  What a relief that will be!

Thanksgiving Dinner was OK - I was just feeling so overwhelmed and physically crummy and exhausted that I didn't enjoy it as much as I was hoping to.  But the food was really good!  Darcy made cute little pilgrim's hats out of chocolate cookies, icing, a reese's peanut butter cup (the little ones), and a little reese's piece.  It was sooo yummy - I'm glad she had leftovers (it was the only item I had 2nds on!)!  :)

Yesterday Matthew came over to help us finish up our leaf-raking.  After 35 bags of leaves and 5 1/2 hours, he was done.  It was insane!!!  We're so thankful for his help.  Joshua was insistent that he didn't want his nap, and he had slept in nicely yesterday morning (so we knew he probably wouldn't nap anyway), so we let him stay up.  The deal was that he could stay up IF he laid in the hammock with a pillow and a blanket and some books while Daddy chopped firewood 30 feet away and Matthew worked.  The kid stayed there!!  I guess the threat of being sent to his room was enough to stick his body to that hammock like nobody's business.  :)  Both boys went to bed early last night and slept in again this morning.  Niiiiice.

The wind is soooo cold today.  After about 10 seconds it sends me into a coughing fit.  Thanks to my oversensitive lungs right now... yeah.  I'm stickin' inside as much as I can today.

I feel like I missed the beauty of the fall season this year - the most vibrant colors showed up while I was laid out flat with a 102 fever for those 12 days.  I almost missed my chance to take our annual 'leaf' pictures, too.  Yesterday, though, I finally tossed the kids in a huge leaf pile and did a quick photo shoot with two somewhat uncooperative children.  I still got a few good ones, though.  Next post, I'll put 'em up.  Along with a few others.

Graeme will be at work late tonight.  Tomorrow night, I have swimming lessons.  I started lessons in September, went to 2 lessons, and then got sick and missed 2 lessons.  I went back last week, and felt miserable the entire time, but at least I learned a thing or two.  I was hoping to feel better these past few days so I could go to the pool and 'practice' a bit more.  Tomorrow is my last lesson in this level, and then I move up a notch in the ladder.  :)  I feel a little unprepared to move up, but the instructor said I'd be fine; just have to do a bit of work to catch up.  But even where I'm at, he said I'd be fine.  Whew.

Time to think about supper.  So much to think about these days!!!

A little grumpy

It's Thanksgiving Day.

And I'm grouchy.

I'm still trying to climb out of the pit of sickness - still very short of breath and unable to do tasks for very long.  I was able to rake one pile of leaves yesterday before the coughing got to me.  An hour later, I was able to bag 3 bags of leaves before having to quit.  I still can't climb a flight of stairs with any great deal of pep in my step.

Church is in an hour, and I don't feel like going.

And if I'm being honest, I really don't even feel like going to Thanksgiving Dinner tonight.

I feel like my life is ruled by projects and lack of energy.  Every time I turn around, there's another project to do.  I can't even keep up with what I've got, for cryin' out loud!  Last night the kitchen was a disaster (making dinner, as well as desserts for today's thanksgiving dinner), I am 7 loads behind on laundry, I have 3 extremely disgustingly dirty bathrooms, and a floor with evidence of two small children being a little squirmy at the table.  Every time I turn around, my office has become more of a catch-all for everyone else's junk, piling higher and higher on 'my' half of the desk.

Just because I am feeling slightly better does NOT mean I have the energy of superwoman.  I am dizzy and nearly passing out several times a day.  I can hardly keep up with what I have...no, I definitely can NOT keep up with what I have at this point.  I'm beyond frustrated.  Makes me want to crawl into a hole and wish Mary Poppins would show up.

Yup, I'm grumpy.

I guess I'm just keeping it real.  *sigh*

Still waiting for recovery...

Today was my first day 'solo' with the boys.  It went OK - last night I slept upright in the armchair in the basement to help my breathing.  "Doze" was more like what I did all night.  But it got me by.

Today, Joshua started Wee College.  He is so proud of his Wee College Bible, his Wee College t-shirt, and his Wee College memory verse chart.  What a kid.  I took Dustin over to Playradise (gargantuan free indoor playground set up every Wednesday morning for church and community kids ages 5 and under), the opening day.  Same church, makes it easy.  I didn't want to be 'out', but at least the kids were occupied.  I'm also a volunteer with Playradise, and knew it would look bad if I wasn't there.  They knew I've been really sick, though.

So I showed up, and LeighAnne took one look at me and said, "You're alive!  Hmm.  You could have stayed home, though..."  Nobody wants to say it, but I look kinda bad.  My friend Rachel said I was "white" - beyond pale.  Yup.  At least they said it as though they cared!  :)  "Pale" is what not eating will do to ya.  I've lost 12 lbs so far - not thinkin' much of it will stay off, but this is definitely not the way to go about weight loss.

Dustin didn't nap today, very well, which made for a really difficult afternoon.  I was depending on his nap to get me through, so I could rest, too.  Didn't happen.  I'm pretty much ready to hit the sack for the night.

Thankfully, as far as i can tell, my fever is gone.  Now I just have to deal with the intense bouts of coughing and associated chest pain.  I'm just exhausted, mostly, from that, and the also-associated 'not being able to sleep for more than 5 minutes at a time'.

So yes, I got through my first day with the kids... but I won't say it was done successfully.  That being said, I'm actually making supper.  For real.  Someone give me a gold star.

A verdict, but still no improvement

I finally got in to see another doctor on Friday - mine went on vacation.  This doc repeated a urine test and listened to my lungs again (both of which were clear 3 days before), and I still had a nice fever when I went into his office - I like to be symptomatic when I see a doctor.  Nothing worse than going in only to have them tell you that you're not that bad; go home.  Anyway, I have a urinary tract infection and bronchitis.  Nice combination.  Lots of shivering, a ton of sweating lately (it's getting really gross), and zero appetite.  I'm forcing down something here and there, but it's not going well.  At least I can drink.

The kids spent the entire week at Gramma & Grampa's house.  Graeme would take them with him in the morning on his way to work, and bring them home after work.  I'd get to see them for a few minutes, as much as my energy would allow, and then go back to bed.  This fever has been fairly unrelenting, and I'm still hesitant to be too close to the kiddies because I don't want them to catch any other mystery bugs that might be floating in my aura.  :)

I miss my kids.  Joshua totally understands that I'm sick and can't play with him, and he's cool with it.  He likes to come and stroke my face and be all loving.  He's a good caregiver.  He gets me more water when I need it, makes sure I'm taking my medicine, and makes sure the lights aren't hurting my head.  :)

Then there's Dustin, who is still a little too young to understand.  Yesterday, since Graeme was home, the boys were home, too.  I've made my 'bedroom' in the basement rec room; we pulled the spare mattress from Joshua's bunk bed and put it on the floor - much comfier than sofa cushions that slip out from under you!  Anyway, so I was laying on the mattress yesterday right before lunch, and Dustin just wanted to play with me, so he started bouncing on me.  Too cute.  I started crying - not because he was hurting me, but because I was just so sad for him.  I can't help what's going on with me... I can't make it stop... and it's so unpredictable!  I felt good enough on Thursday night (I think it was Thursday, anyway!) so I made buns, cleaned the kitchen, helped put the boys to bed... and yesterday, it was all I could do to get to the bathroom.

Every time Dustin comes in from playing outside, or wakes up from his nap, or comes home from Gramma's house, I can hear his little robotic voice, "See Mommy?"  Sometimes he actually finds me (during the day I'll sometimes lay in our bed upstairs), and he'll ask me, "Mommy, play wif me?"  or "Mommy, you sick anymore?"  My heart aches for this little doodle.

So I've been sick before.  I've had some pretty nasty flus.  But after 2 days I'm usually functional enough to look after my own kids!  This is over a week now.

Graeme ventured out to church with the boys today - I think he's going stir-crazy with them.  :)
